DIY His & Hers Sharpie Mugs

This week is different than a normal week here at Put A Bird On It. Saturday, March 8, is my anniversary! 6 years! What an incredible 6 years it has been.

Salt Lake LDS Temple
Because I love LOVE so much {I really do - I did a giveaway dedicated to it!} - everything this week will be about LOVE and MARRIAGE! Including a special post about my marriage on Friday. I've never done a "theme" week, so I'm excited to do something new.

To start off Marriage Week, I have an awesome {and duh EASY} tutorial for you that is ALL about a HIS and a HER. I had so much fun seeing how much everyone loved my West Elm Inspired Sharpie Mugs that I wanted to make another version. I created a funky set of His & Hers Sharpie Mugs. Snuggle up by the fire, put on your favorite Star Wars movie and sip some hot cocoa with these duo mugs.

One of my very first memories of being married was our first morning in our home. I made us breakfast! Ha ha, those were "the days" ... me cooking ... but, really, I did. All I can remember is that toast was involved. But we sat, just the two of us, at our little yellow hand-me-down table, with our green IKEA dishes, in our 1920 little yellow house, and we ate breakfast together. It's one of our favorite memories. And I sure wish we'd had these mugs at that breakfast. How fun would that have been?!

stencils. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut my stencils out of black vinyl. You can free hand your design onto your mugs, if you are good with that kind of thing. I need a stencil! If you would like a full step-by-step tutorial on how to design stencils in Silhouette Studio, leave me a comment. I will post the full version, if people want it! Here is the short version: Design, size & position shapes in SIL Studio. You'll need 4 stencils: lips, mustache, HIS, HERS. When picking a font for your words, choose one that isn't very curvy or thin. You'll want some bulk to the font to be easier to trace with your sharpie. Cut designs out of vinyl with your Silhouette machine.

Once your have your stencils, cut around them, leaving just a little border around the outside of the stencil. Peel away the inside part of the vinyl, leaving the negative space, which is what you'll color in. Place your stencils on your prepped mugs. I didn't use transfer tape - it is easier to position without. I had to make a cut on each stencil to position it, since the mugs are curved.

sharpies. Color in your stencil with your sharpies! I used a couple different techniques. At first, I just scribbled. It worked well for about 5 seconds, until my sharpie started running out and the lines were just taking off the sharpie rather than coloring in the mug! You'll notice the HIS mugs has more white in the mustache - that's because I was just coloring it like a crayon, which isn't the best way. It didn't bother me, because I thought it looked kind of cool like a real mustache, so I left it. But I didn't want that for my luscious, red lips {no one likes smooching chapped lips!}. The better technique was to do LINES, one of top of the other, back and forth from the middle of the stencil to the edge. Once you start drawing on your mug - you'll know what I mean!

bake. To keep your mugs kickin' it for a long time, remember to bake them! I have all those directions & tips on my previous mugs post {HERE}.

Done!

I am dying to see your sharpie mugs! If you make some for you and someone you love, link it up here. I hope you enjoy Marriage Week here on my blog. See you back here tomorrow. A very good friend is guest posting {it might include a recipe for a cookie for 2! you know you want IN on that}.

Hug someone you love today.

xo

  3. I know I've commented on the mugs already (which are way too cool), but I also wanted to say how beautiful that photo is of you and your hubby at the temple. You're stunning in every photo you take :) <3 Happy Anniversary week, lovey!!! So happy for you!

  5. Hi Whitney! Welcome to my blog! We love mugs. I don't drink coffee, but we drink lots of hot cocoa and Roiboos tea {a South African herbal tea my husband knows from South Africa, where he lived for 2 years serving a mission for our church}. So we have some mugs, but it's even more fun to personalize them! I just love Audrey! Her designs are fabulous. Thanks again for being here! xo

  6. Thanks Courtney! Sometimes it is hit & miss with sharpie mugs. Have you tried oil-based sharpies? I am really careful with mine. I just hand wash them. I don't really wash the outside - more a quick soap & rinse of the inside. And yes we are Silhouette girls, huh! It's just too easy, you're right! xo

  8. Ohhh, Pamela, you are so nice! My husband always laughs at that photo and says, "our illegal picture!" because I guess it's technically illegal to climb up on that area and take pictures. But it's a classic SLC Temple wedding photo, so everyone does it, which I guess makes it okay right? Ha ha. Thanks again! xo

  22. These are just regular Sharpies. They do make oil-based sharpies, though. I've seen them at Michael's {don't forget your coupon!}. I don't put my sharpie mugs in the dishwasher. I always hand wash them - kind of a quick soap/rinse of the inside. I don't want to take any chances. :) xo

  23. Ahhhh you totally will love your Silhouette! Did you get the Cameo or the Portrait? There are LOTS of tutorials online. I love Silhouette's youtube channel. That's usually the first place I go to for a tutorial {http://www.youtube.com/user/SilhouetteAmericaInc}. I try to post tutorials here, whenever I use my Cameo, so hopefully it helps. Have so much fun, Marisa!!! xo

  37. Yay I'm so glad I could inspire you! These would be great gifts. I would recommend using oil based sharpies, if you give them away, and advise the person you giving them to to hand wash. Those are my best tips for ensuring the sharpie stays on. Have fun, Cindy! xo
